Distribution of NaCl

Distribution of NaCl

Active sodium/potassium pumps keep intracellular concentrations of potassium high and sodium low, with the reverse true for plasma. Sodium is critical for maintaining blood volume, hence more is required outside than inside of the cell. Chloride “stays” with sodium, although concentrations of chloride are slightly lower than sodium in both intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments.
