Heinz body hemolytic anemia in a cat

Heinz bodies cat

Numerous large Heinz bodies (arrowheads; readily seen without the benefit of new methylene blue) are present on red blood cells in this anemic cat, some of which markedly distort the RBC membrane. The anemia in this cat was attributed to oxidant injury although the nature of the oxidant (e.g. acetaminophen, onion powder in baby food) was not identified (Wright’s stain, 1000x magnification).
